Yoga Workshop: Chakras - harnessing the power within
With Dory Walker
Sunday 2nd October

9.30am - 12pm
Clifton Library, 13 Princess Victoria Street, Bristol, BS8 4BX

The physical aspect of Yoga (the asana's - postures) is only one dimension of practice. In classical yogic theory, the asanas are near the bottom rung of the ladder of Yoga, preparing the body and mind for higher states of being. Relying on pure physical and muscular effort can only go so far and will eventually extinguish no matter how much anatomical strength and genetic suppleness one has. We need to learn to delve deeper, beyond pure physical effort, to enhance the vitality and true understanding of the asana, and comprehend a greater purpose of Yoga.

We have the capability to harness a greater power.

A universal force exists that makes plants grow, night and day happen, and the cycle of birth and death. With our heightened human intellect and ego, we have constructed environments, both physically and mentally, that have taken us out of this life force flow. This energy, this life force can realign us and give our yoga practice vitally and deeper meaning than that of pure anatomical force.

This energy has many different names. In Chinese culture and Martial Arts it's Chi. In Yoga it's known as Prana Shakti.

This energy is within us, all around us, it pervades everything. Like we have a system of nerves and blood vessels within the anatomical body, on a subtle level we have energetic mapping. Within this system there are points, hubs, centres where these energetic roads connect. In yogic theory they are known as Chakras, energy centres. There are many Chakras, seven of which form the major hubs. Each centre has different aspects and elemental qualities such as Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Ether.

In this 2.5 hour workshop we will explore some of the Chakras and elements through asana, pranayama & mantra.

Cost: £25
(£65 for all three workshops (October / November / December 2016)).

Yogakutir 10 Class Card students can use credits as part payment. Student discount also available. To enquire about either, please contact us.

Meditation is an ancient universal system of knowledge. Approach to it varies, but the basic principles remain. This course will present the foundations of meditation from a classical yogic perspective. We will use the breath and mantra as tools to develop concentration.

Asanas and pranayama prepare the body and mind for meditation. Concentration techniques are the fertiliser that allow the experience of meditation to arise.

Yoga is a systematic system and it is the last three steps of the classical eight-limbed yogic system of raja yoga that concern meditation. The steps are dharana (concentration) and dhyana (meditation), which lead to the eighth and final step, samadhi, or super consciousness. The asanas and pranayama practices prime the body and mind ready for these higher rungs of raja yoga. Once you have some mastery of the poses and breathing practices, it is a natural progression to take the first steps in meditation. Meditation is the essence of all yoga practice – in the yoga sutras it is said that yoga is the stilling of the thinking mind (‘yoga chitta vritti nirodha’).

Approaches to meditation vary, but the basic principles remain the same. The fruits of meditation are threefold – physical, mental and spiritual.

Physically, the heart rate and respiratory systems slow down, having a calming effect on the body. Every cell in our bodies is affected by our thoughts and emotions, so through nurturing positive thoughts and feelings in meditation, this has a harmonizing effect both at a cellular and energetic level. With greater mental focus, there is greater clarity. Clarity fosters purpose and direction, which creates emotional wellbeing.

Mentally, meditation asks us to look within, to turn attention to the inner world. For many, the vacillation of thoughts move this way and that, the mind is in a constant state of chatter, liking this, not liking that, grasping at things. This continual movement drains our ability to be still, to be present, to simply Be. The idea behind meditation is to gain control over this internal world, to find balance and peace.

Spiritually, meditation can lead to a greater sense of happiness, which is something everyone wants. If we try to find happiness in the shopping basket, in a relationship or in a certain job, we can be in an endless cycle of desire of if and when. However, with simple yoga and meditation techniques we all have access to the vast peace and happiness that is our true nature and lies within each one of us.

4 Week Improvers Yoga Course - Standing Postures

4 Week Improvers Yoga Course - Standing Postures
Starts Wednesday 3rd August
8.45pm - 10pm at Clifton Library
Teacher: Rory
Cost: £40

Standing postures strengthen the legs and ankles and bring flexibility into the hip joints. They prepare the body for more challenging asanas and use principles that can be applied to all postures.

Grounding and stabilising, the legs provide a support structure to hold the pelvic bowl and enable us to move into the posture. Working through a series of classical asanas, we will apply principles of rooting, centering, aligning, bandhas, elongating and breath awareness to better understand the posture.

Open to all levels, this course is suitable for those who have completed a beginners course to regular practitioners who would like to go deeper into their asana practice.
