Art of asana

For many contemporary trainings programmes, the intention behind assisting is often about moving students into deeper positions — as if depth was the goal — without really understanding the structure, mechanics or real purpose of the asana (and yoga in general).

And more importantly, without understanding the real language of the body. Have you ever been in that place?

👉 Guessing where to place your hands
👉 Holding back because you’re not fully confident in how to assist
👉 Or finding that even your anatomical knowledge doesn’t quite translate to what you’re seeing in front of you

You’re not alone.

I began to question it all when I noticed that many of the assists I was taught weren’t helping. In some cases, they were making people more tense. And in my own practice — they didn’t make sense in my body either.

I started to study more, searching for something that actually worked.
And even when I studied with brilliant anatomists, I noticed a disconnect — they understood the body theoretically, but that didn’t always translate into practice, into asana, into adjusting a living, breathing student.

Mental knowledge and embodied understanding are not the same thing.

It wasn’t until I began studying with Dona Holleman, over 15 years ago, that things began to shift in my teaching (and practice) approach. Her teachings helped me make sense of what was happening in the body, in the pose, and how to actually support someone through it, not into it.

Since then, through daily 2–3 hour practices and over a decade of hands-on experience practising a new methodology I learnt, I’ve developed a practical, intuitive, and respectful way of assisting students. One that:

✅ Respects the autonomy of the student
✅ Builds deep trust
✅ Reduces risk
✅ Reveals the structure and integrity of each asana
✅ And gives the student the opportunity to find the movement themselves — if they want to

Because words are the language of the brain.
But touch is the language of the body.

And when you learn to speak clearly to the body — through touch, pressure, timing, and placement — your students start to understand the pose in a whole new way.

They learn through experience, not just instruction.
This is the approach I will share during our two days together.

Why This Training is Different

The underlining principle of teaching yoga asana is body first asana second. The body always comes first. Too many trainings get this the wrong way around - this means the approach, assisting and adjusting isn’t aligned to the freedom or benefit of the body.

When the body takes centerstage and Yoga becomes the servant to the body (and not the other way around), this changes the focus, approach and outcome - greater support to the student.

Over the course of 2 days, you’ll gain tools and insights that will completely transform how you teach, understand and practise asana.

With direct hands-on experience, you'll be working closely with fellow practitioners to refine your skills and deepen your understanding.

I cant wait to share a methodology and insights that will open your eyes to a whole new level and depth of teaching and understanding of asana.

"There are Yoga teachers and then there are teachers of Yoga. Rory belongs to the latter group… I always learn something new; and, I really mean always. He teaches new ways to get into an asana, ways to become aware of and awaken muscle groups you never knew existed, and to relax and become confident in your body. Rory has a wealth of knowledge of the human body that he’s most skilled in articulating and sharing for a more embodied way of being in the world (not just on the mat)”
