Why I Had to Unlearn Everything I Knew About Headstand

Years ago, I thought I had a solid headstand practice.

I could kick up. I could stay up. From the outside, it looked fine — but inside the pose, I felt tense, unstable, and disconnected. There were days when I’d come down physically exhausted or sore, wondering why it didn’t feel right.

Then I trained with someone at the very top of their game — and I quickly realised that everything I had been taught (and was teaching) about headstand was either incomplete, ineffective, or just plain wrong.

That moment was both humbling and liberating.

I had to unlearn years of bad habits and rebuild from the ground up. I started studying deeply:

  • How headstand mechanics really work

  • How small changes in activation and sequencing make a massive difference

  • Why so many “standard” cues actually destabilise the posture, focus on the wrong mechanics and miss strengthen where you actually need it (it isn’t your arms).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this course suitable for me?

This course is designed for yoga students and teachers who have some experience with asana (ideally 4+ months of regular practice) and want to improve or rebuild their headstand technique.

It’s not suitable for complete beginners, but you don’t need to already be doing freestanding headstands to benefit. In fact, this is perfect if you:

  • Feel stuck, shaky, or unsure in the pose

  • Want clear, structured guidance (not just trial and error)

What if I already have an inversions practice? Will I still learn something new?

Absolutely — and this is a common surprise. Many experienced practitioners have never been shown the biomechanical or energetic subtleties that really make headstand feel balanced and light.

Whether you’re confident upside-down or just starting to build strength, you’ll gain deeper body awareness, more refined control, and techniques that enhance your teaching and practice.

What if I practise a different style of yoga? Will this still apply?
